CASE DETAILS: Police detained Kerimov on 24 November 2016 in Barda district of Azerbaijan, while he was preparing a news report about problems with water supply in a village housing IDPs from Nagorno-Karabakh. Kerimov was released that evening, after spending more than ten hours in detention.
According to Kerimov, shortly before he was arrested, an unidentified man harassed the people he was interviewing, demanding that they “do not speak to opposition journalists”, and “do not criticize the government”. The man then insulted and pushed Kerimov after which the journalist was apprehended and escorted by the police to the Barda District Police Department where the same man accused Kerimov of assaulting him.
Kerimov was forced to write a statement, while his camera recordings were erased. Kerimov has reported that a criminal investigation has been launched against him on charges of assault.
