NIDA activist, in pre-trial detention since August 2016
ROLE: Activist with youth movement, NIDA (‘Exclamation mark’). NIDA, which has over 350 members, aims to achieve democratic and social change in Azerbaijan. The movement claims to have no affiliation with any political party.

ARRESTED: The Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GUBOP) of the Interior Ministry detained Elgiz on 12 August 2016. On the same day, the Nariman District Court ordered that Elgiz be held in pre-trial detention for four months.
CASE DETAILS: On Friday afternoon, 12 August 2016, Elgiz was detained by the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GUBOP) of the Interior Ministry on charges of large-scale illicit drug trafficking. He was held incommunicado over the following weekend, before being sentenced to four months in pre-trial detention.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Several other activists, including the executive secretary of REAL, Natig Jafarli, were detained on the same day that Elgiz was arrested. On the day that Elgiz was sentenced, REAL movement youth activists Elshan Gasimov and Togrul Ismayilov were arrested and sentenced to seven days of administrative detention each on charges of resisting police.
Three other members of the NIDA group are currently serving between seven and eight years in prison on fabricated charges, including weapons possession, narcotics possession, and organising mass riots.
